A Weekend Re-Cap and A Look to Week Ahead

Hello! 
It is a beautiful Monday morning made even better by the fact that BFF S is coming into town today!  I'm super excited to spend most of the week with her, hanging out, maybe getting a little sun.  I'm going to try my best to blog but you'll forgive me if I'm a little MIA ;)

This past weekend was LAS's birthday!  Saturday was a great day.  We spent most of the afternoon at the beach, cruising around, seeing what is for sale or rent, we took a walk on the beach and ate dinner at the port where this is what we saw:

Despite LAS's aversion to birthday cake, it was great day!  My cake craving was satisfied yesterday as we went to another beach town to celebrate an Uncle's birthday was LAS's extended family.  Lots of celebrating and more to come this weekend for my Mom's birthday!  March is a very busy month!

OK, well I'm off to prepare for S's arrival and get a few things done before a meeting and a trip to the airport! Lots and lots of love!!

Oscar Faves!

Much like the Super Bowl signals the end of football season, the Oscars signal the end of award season.  Le sigh.  But for today we can pour over the fashion hits and misses and dream about next year.  Here are some of my favorites (photos courtesy of NY Times, Vanity Fair, Access Hollywood):

Meryl!  I LOVE Meryl and I thought this draped gown was great on her.

Vera Farmiga is radiant in ruffles! The Marchesa gown would have been too much on most people but I think it looks great on Vera and the color is perfection.



Controversial I know but I thought SJP looked great in Chanel couture.  A very 1960s, Sharon Tate-esque look.




Zoe Saldana!  Stunning.  There are no words.

And now for two honorable mentions.  Mostly because I love both of these women.  Sandra, you peaked too early in award season but this dress was still lovely and Jessica, your look for the Vanity Fair party was PERFECTION!!

Headboards

This may seem silly, but one of the things I know LAS and I will have in our future home is a monogrammed headboard.  
Even now, I try to stay on the look out for a great fabric that could be monogrammed and upholstered.  Of course, I see this as a great DIY adventure, one I'm sure will one day be documented here, but I digress.  A week or so ago I stumbled upon some other great ideas for budget friendly headboards courtesy of Martha, naturally.  Here are some of my favorites:

Recipe: Blueberry-Buttermilk Scones

I made these scones this weekend and they are pretty good if I do say so.  If you are like me and enjoy your scones from Starbucks or Panera, you'll find that these aren't as sweet, which I think traditional is supposed to be the case.  One last word, don't pull an MM and forget to fold in the blueberries until the very end.  Makes things a little more challenging ;)



Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cake flour (not self-rising)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup (1/2 pint) blueberries
  • 1/2 cup low-fat buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, plus 1 large egg lightly beaten for egg wash
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Fine sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions
    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Whisk together flours, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter, or rub in with your fingers, until mixture has the texture of coarse meal. Stir in blueberries.
    3. Whisk together buttermilk, 1 egg, and the vanilla. Drizzle over flour mixture, and stir lightly with a fork until dough comes together but a small amount of flour remains in bowl.
    4. Turn out dough onto a work surface, and gently knead dough once or twice just to incorporate flour. Pat dough into a 1-inch-thick round. Cut into 12 wedges. Transfer to prepared baking sheet. Brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 22 minutes. Transfer scones to wire racks to cool. Scones are best served immediately but can be frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw, and reheat in a 350-degree oven for 10 minutes.
